Over-Gaming: The Intermediate/Advanced Sticking PointFiled Under: Uncategorized

Hey Fellas, today I want to talk about over-gaming - the single most common and most detrimental problem most community guys have. Over-gaming is especially common since many of same traits that enable a person to improve quickly in the early stages remain active as the guy reaches an intermediate level, now working as a detriment rather than an advantage. Ask anyone who’s made it to an advanced level and they’ll tell you the later stages are about removing pieces and simplifying the game, rather than adding more on – or put more succinctly you might get an answer like “game is for chodes”…

Note: This article assumes in the reader a certain degree of game proficiency and is intended for intermediate to advanced guys.

Over-gaming stems from the idea that you have to “do” to be attractive – that you have to “game” to get girls. Well in the beginning this is certainly true – if you’re not a naturally outgoing person forcing yourself to get out there and meet people is an active push. Self-diagnosing weak points and working on them is a cognitive process that enables some people to rapidly develop and hone their social skills, while others seemingly stagnate. Ironically, the entire mental process of actively improving one’s game is diametrically opposed to the mindset needed to reach an elite level – the “I am the Game” mindset, and because thought patterns are addictive, once one entrenches themselves in this pattern of cognition and calibration outgrowing it can be one of the game’s biggest challenges.

So then, what is over-gaming and why is it so detrimental to one’s game?

Over-gaming is the external behavior pattern stemming from the internal belief that one needs to actively ‘game’ in order to get the girl. Interestingly, it’s root cause varies depending on what stage in the game the guy is.

For beginners, over-gaming is most often caused by either a failure to recognize attraction or MORE LIKELY an inability to accept that the girl actually likes him. For whatever reason, the guy keeps ‘running high-octane game’ and the attraction rapidly fizzles out as the girl recognizes the dancing-monkey behavior as most likely low self esteem on the part of the guy.

For those approaching intermediate level, over-gaming can often be traced to an addition to attraction and reaction. The guy has reached a skill level where he can frequently trigger attraction in girls and as a he is HOOKED. Attraction becomes like a drug and he NEEDS his fix – he spikes attraction over and over until the girl’s circuits eventually fry like the FemBots in Austin Powers. (More commonly the girl recognizes the guy’s failure to shift out of attraction as insecure, but either way…)

(Admittedly I spent some time in this phase though for different reasons. As a young hotshot eager to make a name for myself I’d go out not to pull but rather to show off – as a result attraction became the focus.)

And for those approaching an advanced level – those for whom this article is written – over-gaming is a product of habit. Your social skills have reached a high level but your internal identification with your new high value is lagging behind. As a result there is a massive incongruence in your actions – you carry yourself as a high value guy, but your belief system betrays you and reveals to the girl that ‘something is not right here’.

(Note, this is also EXTREMELY common in good-looking community guys, as they often look massively incongruent when trying to run “high octane game”. The example I give here is if an average girl were to be approached by Brad Pitt in a bar. Her heart rate shoots through the roof, but then Brad starts doing something weird. He starts pumping attraction, running high octane game, even going dancing-monkey. Now I want to ask you… how fucking weirded out would the girl be?? Her question would be “Why are you being like this??”

Well, as a guy who resonates high-value sub-communications, ‘running game’ can be equally ‘off’ and even work to weird people out. At this level in the game, Less Becomes More.

Sort of like wasabi on sushi – if it’s crap wasabi you need a lot…but the better the wasabi, the less you use, and any amount more becomes too much.

This is a concept I’ve been dancing around with for a while now, but it really crystallized for me a little while ago when interacting with an incredibly hot girl that I literally pulled away from rock stars. At one point we’re talking and she threw out the quintessential congruence test – “I don’t like your shirt”. I looked down at my shirt and genuinely said “Really? I got this in LA, I think it’s rad.” I chuckled a little bit inside as in conventional community dogma this is verbatim what NOT to say…

Her response: “Oh no, I didn’t mean it, I’m just giving you a hard time, I’m really sarcastic” as she grabbed me and started grinding.

Let’s dissect possible ways this could have gone. I’d already interacted with her for 10 mins so she knew what kind of guy I was. Suppose I’d instead still felt the need to ‘game” at this point:

Her: “I don’t like your shirt”
Me: “And by that you mean you don’t like it on me and you’d like to see it crumpled on the floor next to your bed, woah slow down!”
Her: “OMG HAHAHA”

Here I certainly spiked her, and game wisdom says I built attraction and such – BUT, THE VERY IDEA THAT I “BUILT” ATTRACTION IS PREDICATED ON THE NOTION THAT I DON’T ALREADY HAVE IT!

She laughs and thinks to herself “ohh, this guy’s funny” or “ohh this guy’s hot”.

Great, that’s certainly a decent place to be – at least at a beginner or intermediate level. But fact is, at an advanced level this is shit - Merde.

Let’s scrap the game – realize that you are the 10.

Her: “I don’t like your shirt”
Me: “Really? I got it in LA, I think it’s rad”
Her: ”Oh no, I didn’t mean it, I’m just giving you a hard time, I’m really sarcastic”

Now she thinks to herself: “Fuck, that was a dumb thing to say, I need to tone down the sarcasm and start being sweeter”.

Of course these emotional reactions are based on the idea that she already knows you’re a money guy. Here let me ask you a question… When you’re talking to a girl, how long does it take you to realize that she’s hot? Well… what makes you think it takes her any longer? (note: if you can’t distinguish between ‘physically good looking’ and ‘hot’ than this article is not for you)

Realistically in the example above that one response to 1 statement by her will have an inconsequential effect – but you combine the net effect over 1, 5, 10 minutes of interaction and the effect becomes profound.

As you become a money guy You Become The Game. Being YOU is the best way to be – any time you’re not being YOU, anytime you ‘run game’ you’re actually straying away from being that 10 out of 10.

So if this sounds like you, next time you’re in set and that pause comes don’t rush to fill it. When you feel the vibe dropping don’t rush to revive it. When you sense your brain darting to access the perfect response like you’ve done a thousand times before, tell it to chill. Take a pause. Bring ‘Chode’ Back.

Tyler is famously quoted as saying “Attraction is the easiest part of the game – the hardest part is getting the girl to think she actually has a chance with you”.

Well, in this regard, Less is More. The self is always shining through – be confident letting it show, knowing you don’t need to ‘tell’. The girl has an idea in her head of how getting a money guy should feel, how it should go down… be the guy that gives her that experience – don’t be ‘Brad Pitt running game’ ;-)

You’ve made it – it was easier than you thought. Recognize you’re here, on the other side now, so stop acting like a chode… because at this point, it is ‘acting’.

    Great article. This is something I’ve had a gut level hunch about for a while now. I’ve been sort of moving in that direction subconsciously. I’ve got hot attraction game, but I shoot myself in the foot over and over. Now that I see another guy telling me this, I’m going to make it a full out sprint in this direction.

    Def. a great topic, although it seems like you got a little lazy on this one. As someone who is in intermediate-to-advanced level, i think this article could have used some more effort and illustration of principles, perhaps some more real life examples of, like you said, how this plays out more in the 5-10 min range of the interaction. Also, when it’s better to dial back into chode-mode, and when you really need to throw emotional spikes to restimulate the convo.

    When you told me this at camp, the conversation stuck with me and I didn’t believe you 100%. There was big “ah hah!” moment a week later though, after I tonned it down. I didn’t fill the silent moments with talk/game, just smiles :) :)
    Haha, now that I think of it, it reminds me of the scene in Night at the Roxbury, where the two brothers are walking into a really “hot club” and the tall brother says in a panic, “Oh my god! there’s so many hotties here, oh hey what’s up!, what’s up!, what’s up!, what’s up!, WHATS UP!”. then the short brother says says calmly, “you have to pace yourself”. Tall brother says, “oh yeah, your right, what’s up, one, two, three, What’s Up, one, two, three, What’s up”

    This article made two things make sense.

    For the last year, I’ve been doing anti-game. My good approaches would look something like this

    Me: “I like salad.”
    Her: “What? Who are you?
    Me: “Doesn’t matter. Quick. Thumbwars.”
    Her: *giggle*
    Me: *beats her, then spins her around* OK, now you have to dance with me.
    *takes her to the floor full of people doing hip hop and breaks out old school ballroom dancing*
    *go for the makeout*

    It’s like, according to traditional community dogma, THIS SHOULD NOT BE WORKING.

    But I was in the paradoxical position of knowing that I didn’t need game but also being really comfortable with the format of high energy dancing monkey game. So every time I got the urge to impress and run game, I did something ridiculous and crazy instead.

    But that’s not ideal either. It’s a midpoint between getting comfortable with the format of game and dropping game.

    Likewise, I became known as “that guy” in my neighborhood. And it really sucked because people would interact with you like an object - it’s like “You think you have game? Let’s see it.” And it only made me more awkward because I wasn’t fully in alignment with it yet. And so I had to go out to other places in town. But then I decided to try and crack my neighborhood again. And I realized these girls would make out with me if I did over the top theatrics for them. Being crazy dancing monkey man worked, not because it was good game, but because I was filling the role they expected and suddenly they could relax around me. To this day I still hear “This guy is a joke. His game sucks.” And in my head I’m like “I only do sucky shit in this area because that’s what you expect, and the important channels of communication aren’t what you’re looking at anyway.” It’s another halfway point to get to the place where “I am the game, and what I do doesn’t really matter because it’s totally unnecessary in the first place.”

    This was exactly the shit that Nathan was telling me at bootcamp last June, and it has taken tons of effort so far to unwire it. I love the way you articulate this idea.

    I’m really starting to see for myself the whole dynamic of “toning it down” and just “being myself.”

    I’m still working at it and I can feel myself changing in front of my very own eyes. Puzzle pieces are connecting together so to speak. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.

    It all comes back to trust and 100% belief. At this point, I know I’m money so I have to let the girl “game” me.

    As David Lee Roth said ‘The trouble with self-improvement is knowing when to stop’. Cracks me up, but in this context it rings true.

    This article is very timely for me.

    Its saying a few things that have been bouncing in my head for a few weeks and causing me a bit of angst.

    I’ve been in the game 12-18 months. Losing weight, improving my appearance, changing my body language, while at the same time being less outwardly ‘nice’, more positive and dominant, and trying a few routines. With my generally nice ’self coming through’. WOOOO-FREAKIN-HOOOO!!!! Good Times :-)

    Up until about 3 months ago. Oh Crap.

    Trouble is I’m also a bit of keyboard jockey. And I AM a little bit addicted to new ideas and routines and C&F. And most stuff on the internet is really ATTRACTION routines. So I am ADDICTED to flirting/attraction. I’m addicted to PLAYING rather than WINNING. At the same time I’ve built my physique the last 6 months. So I’ve got some much improved looks, ‘inner game’ and masculine vibe but ALSO nuclear routines/cockiness …The results? Not what most newbies might expect …:

    Result 1. Playing the flirting/C&F game with a girl but never really nailing comfort and rapport. It goes off the boil. Into the LJBF zone. Or she ends up hurt or confused.

    Result 2. Only “getting anywhere” with ‘Party Girls’. Same night x- or f-closes. Which is cool and fun and dramatic. But it does wear thin …in some ways lowers self-esteem. E.g. Why can’t I get the QUALITY girls-next-door I really want? The ones who give the subtlest/most imagined IOIs? Who DON’T flip out at my routines? Who actually want CONTENT rather than ‘STYLE’? Who really just want to do AFC-style conversation to get to know you rather than get a stage show?

    Result 3. Doing awesome routine stacks, kino, etc etc on strangers in bars. All in the first 10 minutes. And they have already given me pre-approach IOIs. BAD BAD BAD. So, now I’m *too* competent/confident. Girls get freaked. I had one girl say ‘I’m not stupid you know’. I made her feel bad. *I* FELT BAD. Its the Brad Pitt - in - the bar thing you mentioned. She KNOWS she’s being played with. Not always nice for her. In this case I re-calibrated and pulled it back (because she *was* attracted). TIP: If you over-game like I did then to pull it back react REAL IMPRESSED to a qualifying statement she makes. Or just pay her a compliment about her *personality* In my case, when she said ‘I’m not stupid’ I said ‘I didn’t say you were. In fact you seem quite smart’. After which she went into mad qualifying mode and I bigged up her achievements and acted real impressed… and then she came and sat with me and my friends and ACTUALLY HAD A NORMAL CONVERSATION. WOW. :-)

    Ryan … Your article is crystallizing my thinking. I need to really re-focus on body language, positive vibe, living a fun/interesting life, and *expressing myself*, in comfort/rapport. Its obvious I’ve over-egged things with attraction spikes/routines. They have their place and time. And are less suitable on non-Party Girls.

    Day-to-day I need to chill and And save the killer routines and kino techniques for advanced comfort and ESCALATION. Where they can help push things forwards once you have ‘natural’ attraction and comfort (I’ve seem this recently: and it was just a BASIC ESP test I ran on her once I already had attraction+comfort and we were in a little bubble. Did the test on her - hit the bullseye - kind of broke the dam and she just melted …started stroking my hair and then *SHE* went in for the kiss! She was a closet party girl though LOL).

    Summary: I just have to have more patience and concentrate on getting the logistics required for comfort and building a *relationship* …

    It’s hard to get rid of the habits but I’m definitely making some changes. I started stripping “game” with fashion and am now internalizing these behaviors in my interactions.

    I listen to a lot of the interviews that David D does with various PUA’s at different stages.

    What I noticed is that the more advanced ones are not about techniques and what to say and what not to say.

    They arn’t constantly thinking, ok now i need to do this and and say this.

    They just know who they are and they are ok with that.

    Most advanced PUA’s have gone through this whole personal development journey at like you said at the end … they are just being … rather than thinking.

    It was cool talking to you last weekend. Jasons right you are a very cool dude and your blog rocks. This article really hit close to home, I just recently realized what you said and its helped allot.

    But one question I find that when I am in the moment and chilling out more in set, I begin to loose intent and enjoy the interaction so much that if it doesnt lead to anything that night (still havent broken the snl or make out barrier I have) I loose interest the next day in calling her or setting up a D2, I just want to go out the next night to sarge and get a new girl with a new interaction. Is this common?

    Долго искал блог на подобную тематику и наконец нашёл. Удивительно что раньше я не знал о его существовании, ведь с давних пор занимался вещами такого рода. Порадовало, конечно, наличие полезной информации лично для меня и я абсолютно согласен со всеми остальными людьми, оставившие свои комментарии в данном блоге. Удобная навигация, думаю, также многих порадовало. Хотелось бы и себе замутить такой блог, да нет время, поэтому легче пользоваться этим блогом. Администратор блога – молодец. Так держать! Всё супер, с огромным уважением отношусь к людям, создающие блоги на такие тематики!

    Its like with drawing boundaries. From a higher value frame, BR tonality, its all good. You bring in down the hammer, and then say no more.

    From a chode frame, it will probably sound more like begging.

    Дизайн блога всетаки имеет значение, и вот как не крути, но даже с физиологичской точки зрения приятнее читать текст на белом фоне, окруженный каким-то приятным контуром. Конечно, яркость нужна, но ведь человек приходит на сайт не ради того, чтобы провести здесь 5 секунд, он ведь хочет почитать что-то - кто новенькое, кто комментарии к блогам просмотреть. Я вот тоже иногда из-за комментариев возвращаюсь. чтобы глянуть чего народ там нацедил. Бывают так тему разовьют, что жесть получается. Заболтался. Сорри. пока.

    Пусть и не скромно начинать комментарий с комплимента, но у Вас достаточно приятно побывать в гостях. Пишите Вы, как я вижу, не очень быстро, но с другой стороны, это ведь тоже не плохо. ИМХО это лучше, чем писать всякую ерунду или просто копировать свои тексты с чьих-либо лент. А вот насчет комментариев, тут да, у Вас иногда такие дискуссии разгораются, что прямо даже удивительно.     Дискуссии - это всегда хорошо, но не стоит забывать о том, что не всякому мнению можно верить. Часто в очень серйозных и сложных темах комментарии вставляют дети, иногда это заводит в тупик. Спору нет, бывает, что теже школьники могут дать дельный совет. Но это скорее исключение, чем правило. Поэтому я вообще стал относится к интернет-сообществам с некоторой предвзятостью. Интернет слишком доступен сейчас.
